Art
Intent
At St Edmund’s we recognise the vital role of art and design in allowing curiosity, creativity and self–expression to develop alongside resilience, confidence and critical thinking skills.
Developing children’s communication is at the heart of our school and high priority is given to opportunities for discussion, commentating on what we have seen, and talking through ideas and plans for our own work.
Therefore, as pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our community.
EYFS Development Matters
Pupil Voice: Why do we have art sessions at St Edmund's? "To help us to have the skills to be an artist." Savona "To help us draw and follow our own way." Safia "To give us an opportunity to be creative." Logan "It fills your heart with happiness. You get to do fun things." Miley "You get to expand your imagination." Maja
EYFS
In Nursery have shared the story 'Owl Babies'. They've adored this story. The children have been busy learning about where owls live and what they eat. The children made their own nests for the owl babies and they created owls with different media and play dough.
The Reception children have really enjoyed creating a variety of Winter themed activities using different media.
Lower Key Stage Two
Craft and Design
Fabric of Nature
We began by drawing our own representations of images from the rainforest. We then used these to create mood boards bringing together our images, pictures from gardening magazines and swatches of fabric which fit with our chosen colour palettes.
Painting and mixed Media
Light and Dark
We explored using white and black paint to create tints and shades. We used these different colours to create a 3D effect when painting. We also learnt to use different tools and painting techniques to create effects in our artwork.
Key Stage One
Craft and Design
Map it Out
We have been exploring and creating maps through various art forms including drawing, felt making, printing, and designing stained glass.
Making Felt
We really enjoyed making felt. It was hard work but we had lots of fun! We used wool fibres and rubbed soap flakes into it. Then we did lots of rolling.
We were very proud of what we made!
Here are our stained glass maps.
Drawing
Exploring Mark Making and Line
We looked at different types of lines in relation to Bridget Riley’s work. We had lots of fun creating the different lines using string.
We discussed Bridget Riley’s art work. Lucilene said “It’s looks like a wave.” Ruben said “It makes me feel dizzy and seasick. The lines are moving in my mind.”
Upper Key Stage Two
Painting and Mixed Media
Portraits
Creating continuous line drawings and overwriting were challenging ways for us to develop our line sketching and drawing techniques. Our pieces had so much character and personality - just like us!
