Art
Intent
At St Edmund’s we recognise the vital role of art and design in allowing curiosity, creativity and self–expression to develop alongside resilience, confidence and critical thinking skills.
Developing children’s communication is at the heart of our school and high priority is given to opportunities for discussion, commentating on what we have seen, and talking through ideas and plans for our own work.
Therefore, as pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our community.
EYFS Development Matters
Pupil Voice: Why do we have art sessions at St Edmund's? "To help us to have the skills to be an artist." Savona "To help us draw and follow our own way." Safia "To give us an opportunity to be creative." Logan "It fills your heart with happiness. You get to do fun things." Miley "You get to expand your imagination." Maja
EYFS
In Nursery have shared the story 'Owl Babies'. They've adored this story. The children have been busy learning about where owls live and what they eat. The children made their own nests for the owl babies and they created owls with different media and play dough.
The Reception children have really enjoyed creating a variety of Winter themed activities using different media.
Lower Key Stage Two
Growing Artists
This drawing unit focuses on using different media to create tone when drawing. We began by looking for organic and geometric shapes in objects and using these as a basis for our sketches.
We then learned more about creating tone (areas of light and dark) by shading using our pencils.
We have also been looking at detailed botanical drawings by Carl Linnaeus and Charles Darwin. We produced our own detailed drawings after close observation of some flowers, then added colour using watercolour paints.
Key Stage One
Sculpture
We made different sized cylinders and stuck them to a base. We enjoyed arranging them in different ways and creating our 3D sculptures. Marina and Maya decided to arrange their cylinders first before they stuck any on their base so they could decide how they wanted their sculpture to look. We loved Harry’s King Charles sculpture. He made his cylinders look like a crown!
3D Drawings
We had great fun today using paper strips to make a sculpture. We folded the paper to create curves, loops, zig zag and spirals. We talked about the composition of the paper pieces and even tried to overlap some pieces. Our creations look amazing!
Creating a 3D picture.
We had great fun working as a team to create our ‘tree of life’.
Upper Key Stage Two
Make My Voice Heard
We are studying drawing techniques in Art this half-term. In our first lesson, we created a research page in our sketchbook to gather imagery, pattern and colour ideas from Maya art – just as Mexican artist, Diego Rivera, may have done.
