Design Technology

Subject Intent

At St Edmund’s our Design Technology Curriculum endeavours to develop pupils’ creative, technical and practical skills for completing their everyday tasks confidently and successfully. At St Edmund’s, we recognise the importance of developing children’s communication, which is at the heart of Design Technology when working together, using our ever- developing vocabulary and spoken skills. In Design Technology we provide opportunities for the pupils to develop their skills in designing and making their own prototypes and products. Pupils learn to work together in critiquing, evaluating, testing and comparing their project designs and further develop their communication so that they are able to articulate their views and ideas. This supports every child to become an independent thinker, and to face challenges with perseverance and resilience.
Design technology experiences are used to equip pupils, and support our community, with the skills to operate successfully in the wider world.

KS1 and KS2 complete two/three Design Technology Modules per year.

Here are some of the things pupils said about Design and Technology at St Edmund's:

Design Technology 2025-2026

EYFS

 Food Technology

EYFS children have had lots of fun watching Miss McManus make pancakes. We talked about the ingredients and utensils needed and then everyone had the opportunity to taste the pancakes. We also discussed the need for hygiene and safety.

KS1

Wheels and axels

This half term our unit is 'wheels and axels.' We thought about the design of our pull along toy including equipment and resources.  We loved designing and decorating our toys. Finally, we enjoyed manoeuvring them around the classroom and time to evaluate.

Lower KS2

Food Technology - Adapting a recipe

Year 3/4 have been taste testing lots of different biscuits so that we could analyse their flavours before adapting recipes to make our own.  Children then designed and created their own boxes for their product.

Upper KS2

Mechanical Systems: Gears and pulleys

In this unit, Year 5/6  created a working gear system to create a pulley to allow a smaller effort to exert a greater force.  Children then created market research before designing their own Eco-bike gadget.
