Music Curriculum Intent

Here at St. Edmund’s we provide a music curriculum that enables each child to reach their full potential academically, spiritually, socially and personally. We believe that music is a unique and valuable form of communication that can help enhance and develop the way our children feel, think and act.  Our inclusive music curriculum allows all children to be active participants and nurtures individual talents.  St. Edmund’s provides children with the opportunity to sing, compose and perform in front of an audience both within and outside of school.  We are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of music to their own and others’ lives and wellbeing and also the impact music has in our wider community.

Pupil Voice: What is good about Music lessons at St Edmund's? Reception: ‘I love singing with my friends, I keep on singing it at home. We can still sing when it’s not a music lesson.’ KS1: ‘Sometimes it’s singing, sometimes it’s instruments, sometimes it’s clapping rhythms. I like learning songs.’ LKS2: ‘Music relaxes me and makes me calm.’ UKS2: ‘We’ve learned to read the music and play the notes.’ ‘Music is fun, it’s time to think and relaxing. We learn sign language and actions to go with the songs.’

EYFS

In Reception, the children have been exploring celebration music from around the world. They enjoyed using the African drums to tap out rhythms for their friends to copy. Children also explored singing different songs using loud and quiet voices. They practiced using instruments to accompany the songs.

KS1

In KS1 the children have been examining different favourite fairy tales and discussing the key
moments in these stories. They learned to clap and read simple sound patterns, matching the different characters of the story. Pupils then used these sound patterns to retell the fairy tale, bringing the story to life through sound and movement.

LKS2

In LKS2 the children have started playing the glockenspiel as part of our Whole Class Instrumental lessons. They have also been learning some Viking songs during our Developing Singing Technique unit.

UKS2

In UKS2, pupils have been learning about film backing tracks and how they add suspense to scenes or suggest characters' feelings. They read 'graphic scores' to recognise pitch, tempo and major / minor sounds.

Pupils also used the glockenspiels
